The devastating floods affecting more than 60,000 Malaysians have brought out the samaritan spirit in Singaporeans, who have organised their own donation drives to help the disaster-stricken states.
The New Paper reports on a few independently organised donation drives by empathetic Singaporeans, including 35-year-old property agent Alvin Tan, who assembled a convoy of 60 cars to travel to Temerloh on New Year's Eve to deliver supplies such as rice, milk powder and mineral water to the affected villagers. Tan expressed his desire to travel to Malaysia again if the flood condition worsens.
The Lions XII fan group Exclusinga also coordinated a successful donation drive last Friday at Pasir Ris with help from the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), collecting two shipping containers' worth of food supplies and clothing which were delivered yesterday. LionsXII captain Isa Halim and his teammates Sufian Anuar and Faris Ramli were also at hand to help out with the drive, according to ESPN FC, while FAS President Zainudin Nordin arrived with over 50 bags of medical supplies and donations.
Over at Woodlands' Vista Point yesterday, Ramesh Panicker and his friends organised a donation drive in three days, reportedly collecting close to 600 kg of rice, 55 litres of oil and more than 100 boxes of clothes. They hired a lorry to transport the donations to a Malaysian army camp in Tebrau today, where they will be sent to those affected by the floods.
All in all, a very heartwarming start to 2015.
