Adding an even more unfortunate twist to the tragic case of missing flight QZ8501, it has been revealed that AirAsia Indonesia was not licensed to fly the Surabaya-Singapore route on Dec. 28.
According to Indonesia's Minister of Transportation Ignatius Jonan, the airline was only approved to fly the route four days a week — Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Flight QZ8501 flew on a Sunday.
Indonesian officials have since suspended AirAsia's service between Surabaya and Singapore, announcing the launch of a full investigation and strict checks on all other operating airlines to ensure their compliance with license agreements.
According to CNN, the transport minister called the case a "violation against the agreement in the route provided". Indonesia AirAsia CEO Sunu Widyatmoko has mentioned that they will be cooperating fully with the investigation.
Flight QZ8501 is believed to have crashed into the Java Sea due to bad weather, killing all 155 passengers and 7 crew on board. Recovery efforts are still ongoing.
