Unsurprisingly, the future residents of the upcoming Fernvale Lea Build-To-Order (BTO) flat estate are not exactly thrilled to hear that their neighbourhood will feature a massive columbarium in the backyard.
The forlorn residents made their concerns clear in a three-hour dialogue at Anchorvale Community Club yesterday to Member of Parliament for Sengkang West Dr Lim Pin Min, who insisted that there would not be a crematorium or funeral parlour services at the Chinese temple-cum-columbarium, Straits Times reports.

Some enraged residents have even demanded for a refund, as they were unaware that such a grim establishment will be built near their future homes —with concerns about traffic congestion and property resale values among the top concerns.
Residents were aware that a Chinese temple would be built nearby, but had no idea that it would also double as a columbarium facility. Brochures issued to Fernvale Lea's potential flat buyers did indicate that palces of worship may include resting places for the dead as an ancillary use.
As of writing, an online petition titled "say no to a columbarium next to our future home" has gathered more than 900 signatures.
