Police issue advisory to stay vigilant during New Year's Eve celebrationsAs the streets swarm with merrymakers tonight in the eve of the new year, the police have advised shoppers and revelers to remain vigilant as always during this period of frenzied celebrations. Theft and pickpocketing seem to be the most common crime to look out for, especially since more than half the country's population will be out in town tonight. Police have warned that thieves will go to lengths such as unzipping or slitting bags of victims to steal, sometimes working with accomplices to distract or block your view when stealing from you. Wallets, cash, jewellery and other valuables should not be easily accessible and placed in firmly secured bags. Shop thieves will also take advantage of the festive season hubbub, and police have advised retailers to implement measures such as deploying adequate security personnel, ensuring a good line of sight for displays and keeping expensive merchandise behind locked display cabinets.  Other than thieves, the festive season also brings out the perverts looking on the hunt for quick opportunities to commit outrage of modesty. Women are advised to stay wary of suspicious strangers in crowded areas and keep to well-lit areas where there are more people and traffic. Where possible, moderate the amount of alcohol intake to avoid becoming vulnerable and have a friend escort you home late at night.  Photo: Marina Bay Sands Facebook page
