Singaporeans conveyed their outrage over an image uploaded on Facebook by user Shan Ang — a picture of policemen handcuffing kids, none of whom seem to be older than 12-years-old.
Police speaking to AsiaOne explained that they were responding to a call requesting assistance in a case of theft along East Coast Road last Saturday. The three boys — aged between nine and 12 years old — were arrested and handcuffed as they attempted to escape before police arrival. The police maintained that the handcuffs were necessary "for their own safety and the safety of others".

Naturally, with such a powerful image, netizens have cried out allegations of police state and police brutality. It is understood that handcuffing children are perfectly legal — but was it truly necessary?
Police investigations are ongoing.
