A vigilant Certis Cisco officer managed to prevent what could have been a horrific event when a drunk driver almost ploughed his sedan into a busy playground filled with children and senior citizens last Friday night.
Thankfully, the car rolled to a halt about 200 metres away from the Beach Road playground due to the actions of 26-year-old auxiliary police officer Simon Lawrence, according to the Straits Times. During an area patrol, the lance corporal spotted the black sedan driving on the pavement and ran over to the driver’s side, flashing his torchlight to get the driver’s attention. He was even prepared to take drastic measures, including smashing the windshield of the car with his baton.
Together with his fellow Certis Cisco colleague, they convinced the driver to step out the car. It was revealed that the driver had drank six cans of beer earlier in the evening, and begged the officers to let him go — to the point of attempting bribery. The officers refused to let him off, and had to restrain him as the driver grew increasingly agitated during the ordeal.
He was apprehended by the Traffic Police after a breathalyser test indicated that he was indeed intoxicated.
