The Health Science Authority (HSA) has put out an alert, warning members of the public not to consume a batch of Chinese Proprietary Medicines after they were found with levels of arsenic that exceeded the permissible limits allowed.
The two medicines — Zhenzhu Shedan Chuanbeimo and Huatan Zhike Chongcao Zhenzhu Chuanbeimo — bearing the batch number T292 had been stopped and retailers have been instructed to remove the affected stocks from their shelves. So far, no adverse reactions have been reported from the consumption of the purchased batches.
Both products are used to treat small illnesses such as fever, cough, vomiting, and phlegm. Excessive exposure to the arsenic metalloid can potentially cause symptoms such as dehydration, dizziness, abdominal pain, increased heart rate and many other alarming ailments.
HSA strongly advises the public to check the batch number on the boxes before continuing the consumption of both medicines, and if they do bear the number T292, stop consuming them immediately. Those who are unsure of the batch they have in possession are advised not to use the products at all.
