Singaporean sentiments towards the arts looks to be increasingly positive, a fact evidenced by the latest report by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.
Their Singapore Cultural Statistics report provides an annual update on the state of arts and cultural landscape in the nation, encompassing performances such as dance, music, theatre and literary arts along with heritage events such as museum exhibitions.
One key highlight from their study reveals that total visitorship to national museums and heritage institutions have massively increased from 2.8 million in 2012 to 3.2 million in 2013, a record high after the launch of free museum admission for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents.
The sentiments have also trickled down to the young, who are now more assured in pursuing their aspirations in arts and culture — full time tertiary arts enrolment and participation in art-related co-curricular activities have increased in 2013, with over 5,400 full-time arts students enrolled and over 137,000 students getting involved in arts-related activities.
This has been aided by the efforts by the government to inject more money into creating a better arts and cultural landscape in Singapore. Total government funding reached over $677 million in 2013, significantly higher than the previous years.
