Illegal weight loss products leave 2 hospitalized after suffering hallucinations and kidney failureAn attempt to shed weight fast has landed two people in the hospital after they purchased and consumed illegal weight loss products found online.  According to the Health Science Authority (HSA), the products they consumed carried potent, undeclared chemical ingredients — ‘Nutri Drops Grapefruit Diet’ had high levels of sibutramine, which only increased its toxicity while ‘Nutrex Research Adipodex’ contained yohimbiine, a potent medicinal ingredient not allowed in products sold here.  Consuming them turned out to be a bad decision. A teenager experienced hallucinations after regularly taking ‘Nutri Drops Grapefruit Diet’ for more than a month. The other individual consumed ‘Nutrex Research Adipodex’ and suffered acute kidney failure. Both products were purchased online, claiming to contain all-natural ingredients such as hawthorn berry, raspberry ketone and other natural sounding stuff.  HSA has advised members of the public who are consuming the mentioned products to stop doing so and consult a doctor immediately if they feel unwell, and that they should be wary of health products sold online as they lack credibility.  Those convicted of engaging in the sale and supply of illegal health products containing potent medicinal ingredients will face a penalty fine of up to $10,000 and a jail term of up to two years under the Poisons Act.  Photo: HSA newsroom
