Gas leak explosion and pungent fumes sends construction workers and Lau Pa Sat stallholders running Excavation works near Lau Pa Sat went awry yesterday when it lead to a gas leak that rocked the busy locale with a loud explosion and fumes of pungent yellow gas emanating from the ground.  According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), excavation works had damaged an underground pipe in Boon Tat Link, causing a gas leak and the subsequent explosion, TODAY reports. SCDF were alerted to the incident at around 10 in the morning, deploying a fire engine and a Light Fire Attack Vehicle to stem the leak.  Constructions workers performing the excavation and Lau Pa Sat stallholders nearby had to evacuate the area due to the extremely stifling gas odour. All business operations at the popular food centre were suspended for two hours as a safety precaution.  Speaking to reporters, an SP PowerGrid spokesperson confirmed that gas supply to the area have not been affected and that the leak no longer poses any danger to the public. Repair work for the burst pipe are being carried out, and should be completed by today.  Photo: Kimon Berlin via Flickr
