Renowned Japanese bakery Asanoya opening in Singapore this weekendAsanoya, the bakery chain originating from the Karuizawa town in Japan, is opening at Wilby Central (#01-03, 15 Queen Street) on Saturday, Nov. 15.  You don't normally call a bake shop awe-inspiring, but you kind of expect that from a brand as old and respected as Asanoya, and it is.  Founded in the 1930s to serve the country's noble class, Asanoya offers a drop-dead gorgeous selection of rustic Japanese-style breads with a European influence.  On our hit list is definitely their signature Karuizawa Raisin, a massive single loaf that weighs over 1kg. Studded with thick, juicy raisins, it can be ordered in slices (charged by the weight at $2.60 per 100g) and also comes in Blueberry, Caramel, Green Tea and Sakura.  If you're not fond of raisins, they also have the flavoured Tea Bread ($4.20 — 4.80), which comes in Earl Grey, Blueberry and Orange Peel. Nice and thick and pillowy soft, this is best enjoyed with good, old-fashioned marmalade. You can stock up on spreads at Asanoya's in-house retail section before popping out.  But what's been keeping us up at night is this twisted pastry dream: Asanoya's Maplet Walnut Pretzel ($3.20). It looks, smells and tastes heavenly, having been baked with homemade maple cream, butter and walnuts.  The new Asanoya bakery in Singapore, the chain's first outside of Japan, will also serve savoury bakes and sides, such as soup, salad and quiche.  Stay updated via Facebook.
