It’s all fun and games until someone files a police report. Businessman Geoffrey See didn’t see the humour in having his photo used in a satirical article that portrayed him as the ‘arrested’ man behind SMRT Ltd (Feedback).
The fake article — titled Man behind satire page, SMRT Ltd (Feedback) arrested; links to WikiLeaks confirmed — claims to have the police apprehend the owner of the internet vigilante site SMRT Ltd (Feedback), catching the man in the act of enjoying ‘mugs of teh’ at a coffeeshop along Haji Lane, and coincidentally, See’s picture shows him doing exactly that at Kampong Glam Cafe. The image was actually taken by Straits Times in a profile about the Yale and Wharton school gradute, first published in March earlier this year.
According to TODAY, the founder and managing director of non-profit organisation Choson Exchange was deeply troubled over the usage of his image in the article. See filed a police report over the incident as it had created a ruckus among his friends, families, employees and business partners, some of whom actually believed the fake news. "The fake article also links me to Wikileaks, and I can assure you, my alter ego is not Julian Assange, nor do I share his fondness for room rentals at Ecuadorian embassies," See remarked in a post on the Choson Exchange website.
Reportedly, the article was taken down after See contacted the host company. The police are currently investigating into the case.
