Netizens have uncovered a chilling find deep in the heart of the internet — a site that streams footage from unsecure CCTVs and online cameras, openly accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Meaning someone could be watching you right now.
Insecam was designed with the intention to demonstrate the importance of security settings, although it comes at the terrifying price of enabling voyeurs to take a look at what’s happening on the other side of the lens. The website streams footage from security surveillance systems, online cameras and digital video recorders from all that have not altered their default passwords. Users can simply browse cameras from all over the world — including Singapore’s 785 unsecured channels as of writing.
Completely destroying any notions of privacy in the workplace or even at home, it only takes a few clicks to peek into the lives of others who seem completely oblivious to the fact that they’re being watched by complete strangers. It’s a very unsettling feeling looking at things that were meant for other eyes only; even scarier is the fact that anyone with an internet connection can easily see what you’re up to.
The only way to prevent your surveillance cameras from being listed and streamed on the site is to change your default passwords. Oh and don’t worry, USB cameras and webcams aren’t listed on the Insecam— but we’re pretty sure there’s another site in the deep web that does exactly that.
