SilkAir to fly direct from Singapore to Cairns next yearAs the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and Queensland’s tropical rainforests, Cairns ranks among Australia’s most visited places. Come the middle of next year, it’s going to be a lot easier for us to get there. SilkAir will commence a thrice weekly service between Singapore and Cairns from May 30, 2015. Flights will leave Singapore at 1:40am on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with the return from Cairns at 12:40pm on Mondays and Thursdays, and at 11:10am on Saturdays. Outbound flights will transit in Darwin on Mondays and Thursdays while inbound flights make the stop on Saturdays. The news has been welcomed by Jann Stuckey, Queensland’s Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and Commonwealth Games. “SilkAir’s new services into Cairns will bring an estimated 20,000 extra visitors annually into one of Australia’s most desirable destinations,” she said in a statement published on SilkAir’s website. “The Queensland Government looks forward to working in partnership with SilkAir to deliver international marketing activities over the next three years to support this highly anticipated service.” The new route is also expected to provide Cairns with a more efficient link to destinations around Asia and Europe.
