LTA kicks off high-tech information system trials at seven taxi stands While third-party taxi booking apps are doing a pretty great job at getting us taxis when we need them, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) are trying out ways to make taxi hunting an easier task.  The LTA have already launched a trial of their Taxi Information System (TIS) in seven taxi stands to better match taxi supply with demand.  The taxi stands located at HarbourFront Centre, Hitachi Towers, Keck Seng Tower, Lucky Plaza, Ngee Ann City, OG People’s Park and VivoCity all sport various high-tech features that help with improve waiting times and reduce empty cruising for taxi drivers.  Heat sensors will detect the commuters waiting in the taxi queue in real-time, along with intelligent camera technology that streams real-time footage of taxi passenger queues online on the MyTransport website and smartphone application. The various taxi call centres will also be able to receive information on which stands have high demands and in turn transmit the information to taxi drivers. The system is also configured with an algorithm to alert the taxi companies’ call centres automatically when there are 15 or more people in the queue.  Pretty high tech stuff, honestly. The TIS trial will be carried out at the aforementioned seven taxi stands for a year.  Photo: Sergey via Flickr
