Killer litter still a major pitfall in HDB estatesMinister for Environment and Water Resources Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan updated Parliament yesterday on the situation of high-rise littering problem in Singapore, and apparently it’s still a persistent issue in HDB estates. From Sept. 2013 to Sept. 2014, the National Environmental Agency (NEA) reported a total of 2,200 cases of high-rise littering, a serious safety hazard that reared its head again a couple of times this year.  He adds that in most cases, the situation improved after outreach and education efforts by the Town Councils, grassroots organisations and the NEA. Surveillance cameras have been deployed in areas with persistent high-rise littering cases, uncovering 169 culprits. A total of 273 litterbugs have been apprehended since 2012. Dr. Balakrishnan assures that each killer litter case are being investigated rigorously.  Earlier in June, and elderly woman died in Eunos Crescent after being struck by a bicycle wheel flung by a teenage boy from the 14th floor. In January, two men were arrested for throwing down a sofa that nearly hit a passerby, while three others were arrested the next month for tossing out plastic bottles that injured a four-year-old boy.  Photo: digitalpimp. via Flickr
