Despite grumblings about plans to integrate Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) with satellite technology, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew insists that the system can help motorists plan their journeys and avoid congestion.
The Minister informed Parliament yesterday that the new road pricing system that relies on Global Navigation Satellite System will be more efficient in traffic management.
Motorists can find that the pricing will be more equitable as they will be charged according to the distance they travel on congested roads, and not per entry. Exactly how much the charge will be depends on the state of congestion.
The technology will also make every vehicle a sensor for the Land Transport Authority to develop a more accurate perception of traffic situations, which can be broadcasted to motorists to help them better plan their journeys and avoid busy roads.
He also revealed that maintaining the current gantry system will not be “financially prudent”.
