Christopher Nolan’s latest motion picture epic Interstellar opens in theatres this Thursday, but he’s not the only one with cosmic aspirations.
Last Saturday, local technology start-up IN.Genius unveiled a space capsule that will send the first Singaporean into space, according to Channel NewsAsia.
The capsule is now on display at the SEA Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa as part of the Space for Singapore exhibition, which will run until Nov. 30.
IN.Genius founder and managing director Lim Seng made a promise back in 2013 that he wants to launch the first Singaporean into space by 2015, and it looks like they’re delivering on that oath. Lim plans carry out this celestial accomplishment as a gift for the nation’s 50th birthday next year.
The capsule will be launched by a stratospheric balloon, taken up to 20km into the stratosphere. After cruising in space for half an hour, the capsule will then return to earth by parachute and parafoil.
Volunteer candidates for the programme have reportedly been undergoing rigorous training to prepare and select the best person to represent Singapore in outer space.
