The Canadian capital of Ottawa was thrown into chaos yesterday as an armed assailant managed to gun down a soldier guarding the national war memorial and barging into the parliament building before engaging in a shootout with the police. The gunman was shot dead, but the city remained on high alert throughout the day.
The shooting occurred not long after Canada raised their terror threat — earlier this week a soldier was killed in a hit-and-run incident by a Muslim convert. The incidents may be related to the Canadian government’s recent decision to join the fight against the Islamic State extremists in Iraq.
In response to the shootings in Canada, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated that Singapore condemns the incident, expressing condolences to those affected.
“The attacks underscore the need for countries to remain vigilant in dealing with the threat posed by terrorists”, MFA declares. “Singapore stands in solidarity with the Canadian Government in the fight against terrorism.”
