The public are welcomed to get a taste of the future this week with the launch of autonomous vehicle trials at the Chinese and Japanese Gardens in Jurong East.
According to a press release, park visitors will be able to tour the grounds in the comfort of driverless buggies for a week starting this Thursday.
This would be the first time the research team from the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) and National University of Singapore (NUS) are putting their two self-driving buggies on a public trial. The team have been studying autonomous vehicles and tested them at the NUS UTown campus for close to four years.
The vehicles were constructed using golf carts outfitted with a blinding array of computers and laser sensors, all of which are worth around $30,000. The two buggies are capable of carrying up to three passengers per trip, and can reach a maximum speed of 10km per hour.
SMART project leader Dr James Fu Guo Ming emphasised that the aim of the trials are to raise public awareness of self-driving vehicles and going public acceptance of the futuristic concept.
Those interested in taking a ride in the driverless buggies can book an appointment on their official website.
