A nationwide emphasis on efficiency, as well as tightened hiring measures, have helped shrink the size of foreign manpower across the Services sector.
The overall foreign workforce (FW) growth in the first half of 2014 was the lowest since 2009.
In 2013, the FW growth was 12,100 – a drastic drop from 22,800 in 2012 and 53,700 in 2011. These statistics aren’t inclusive of foreign domestic workers.
The significant decrease has proven to make a positive impact on the income size of Singaporeans. There's been a notable increase in earnings in 2013 when compared to previous years, especially within the households of low-wage workers.
Firms have also been observed providing more self-service options to customers, on top of offering more versatile job packages to citizens.
Minister for Manpower Mr. Tan Chuan-Jin said, “We intend to maintain our current FW policy stance, without liberalising nor having new measures to tighten foreign worker numbers further, which should maintain the motivation for businesses to adopt manpower-lean business models, and to improve job outcomes for Singaporeans”
