In a joint announcement by the Land Transport Authority and public transport operator SMRT, 29 new trains will be added to the current fleet to meet higher demand for ridership.
The additions are set to boost the capacity of the North-South and East-West lines, and are expected to arrive progressively between 2016 and 2019. When tallied together with the procurement of 41 more trains announced last year, the total number of SMRT trains will see a 40 percent increase by 2019.
With the upcoming expansions to the SMRT network including trains along the extended Tuas West line and the Canberra MRT station, the new trains will hopefully satiate commuters here, who have been increasingly irate over the quality and cost of public transport service.
