A global study on the ultra-affluent population have revealed that 155 new billionaires were minted this year, including five from Singapore.
According to the Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census 2014 released today, the combined wealth of billionaires around the world have increased by 12% to US$7.3 trillion, with most of them found Europe and North America.
Asia however boasted the largest billionaire wealth increase, growing by 18.7% throughout the whole region. Singapore ranks third in the list of top 10 Asian billionaire cities, with a total combined wealth of US$65 billion from 32 billionaires — which is an increase from last year’s 27. Hong Kong and Beijing place first and second on the list with a combined wealth of US$343 billion and US$98 billion respectively.
In terms of highest number of billionaires per capita in the world, Singapore ranks sixth with 5.8 billionaires per million people, while Liechtenstein scores the highest with 125 billionaires per million people.
Other interesting data include the fact that 16% of Singapore’s billionaires have no formal education beyond high school, and that there is a complete absence of female billionaires here. It’s also good to know that 84% of Singapore’s billionaires are active philanthropists.
The census – which looks at the global billionaire population from July 2013 to June 2014 – examines this top-tier wealth segment by geographical location, gender, sources of wealth and personal traits.
