Legal services are more often than not very costly, especially to those among the low-income threshold. With the newly launched Community Legal Pro Bono Services Network, free legal services are available to those who need it most.
Set up by the five Community Development Councils (CDC) and the Law Society of Singapore, the initiative will help expand the network of community legal clinics, where residents will have one-on-one consultation sessions with qualified lawyers who will help by providing basic legal advice on personal matters ranging from matrimonial, loan and employment issues.
Currently, there are two places where one can receive such services — Woodlands Civic Centre and South East CDC.
According to Channel NewsAsia, the Law Society of Singapore intends to recruit more volunteer lawyers to help out in the community by providing pro bono counsel. So far, 15,000 residents have received legal counsel at the legal clinics over the past seven years.
