On Sept. 3, passengers of Tigerair’s TR2015 experienced an alarming “sawing sound” that lasted an entire half an hour of their flight from Bangkok to Singapore.
According to Channel NewsAsia (CNA) there were passengers that wanted to disembark when the noise continued persistently during the plane's taxi, but the flight took off anyway.
Ms. Fong Weihui, the passenger who recorded the video below, said the aircraft went through violent tremors before taking off.
CNA reports that the sound was coming from the plane's Power Transfer Unit (PTU), a component that links the aircraft's hydraulic systems. It's only supposed to run when the aircraft is on ground, but a fault caused it to continue operating even after take-off.
The pilot had tried to explain this during the flight, but his announcement was masked by the noise.
