![ICA seizes $1.5 million worth of contraband cigarettes hidden among potato chips]()
A bumper crop of contraband cigarettes worth more than $1.5 million was uncovered from a Singapore-bound lorry on Sept. 5 at Woodlands Checkpoint.
Officials from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) were conducting a routine inspection on a Malaysian-registered lorry when they found a total of 14,519 cartons of contraband cigarettes concealed among pallets of potato chips. According to ICA, the evaded duty and GST implicated could have amounted to about $1.1 million and $100,000 respectively.
The 36-year-old lorry driver has been arrested and the vehicle seized by Singapore Customs for further investigations.
