In the first of its kind in Singapore, the Museum of Independent Music (MOIM) is set to open in January next year as an educational and archival space about the country’s underground music scene.
Museum director Tarmizee Taksen reveals that the aim of MOIM is to showcase past and present subcultures and home-grown communities dedicated to keeping Singapore’s music reputation alive. This will be done through the collection, preservation and archival of albums, gig posters, photos and publications related to Singapore-made music across multitudes of genres such as heavy metal, hardcore punk and indie-pop.
Visitors - tourists and locals alike - will be able to educate themselves about the history and the current state of Singapore’s music scene in a much broader sense within a structured manner with the hope to instil the passion in supporting local music initiatives.
“Singapore is rich with multi-talented musicians from various cultural backgrounds and that is what makes it unique. While the hype is on, lets not let it fade and die as history might eventually repeat itself.” Tarmizee concludes.
MOIM opens at the Lithe Paralogue Studio in January 2015. Keep up to date about the museum on their Facebook page.
