In fear of pissing off Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA) the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has self-censored an apparently risqué scene from the latest season of their sci-fi television show Doctor Who, according to various media reports.
The scene in questions involves female Silurian detective Madame Vastra locking lips with her human wife Jenny Flint in an attempt to save her life. The scene had to be cut due to MDA’s broadcast code in the section regarding ‘Public Morals And Social Values’ that specifies that “information, themes or subplots on lifestyles such as homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexualism, transsexualism, transvestism, paedophilia and incest should be treated with utmost caution” and that they should not “in any way promote, justify or glamorise such lifestyles”.
Breaching the code would have meant heavy fines for the BBC, and a spokesman has mentioned that the cut had to be made to comply with Singapore’s broadcast regulations and did not interrupt the storyline.
The scene appears in the premiere episode of Doctor Who’s eighth series, starring Peter Capaldi as the twelfth iteration of the titular Doctor since the show’s debut in 1963.
