An 18-year-old man died at the Changi General Hospital on Friday after collapsing while taking a shower, The New Paper (TNP) reports.
Recent ITE graduate Gregory Ng had started screaming while in the bathroom at about 10pm, prompting his family, who lived with him in their Hougang Avenue 3 flat, to try and break down the locked door. An electrical socket connected to the water heater was smoking.
When they succeeded, they found him on the bathroom floor. The family then turned the electrical switch off and went to him, eventually attempting to perform CPR as instructed by a rescue on the phone.
Ng was later rushed to the hospital, where he died of cardiac arrest.
Speaking to TNP, Ng's 62-year-old grandfather Anthony said he'd recently purchased the branded heater for $300 to replace an old one.
Police have classified the case as 'unnatural death" and are investigating.
