A new in-vehicle smart camera that can warn the driver of potentially dangerous traffic situations in real time is currently on trial at ComfortDelGro.
The 38˚ wide angle MobilEye is installed on the front windshield of the taxi and works on algorithms that 'read' different types of traffic signs while the vehicle is in motion. It then determines the risks associated with the surrounding traffic environment and provides real-time audio-visual warnings via a 49mm round-shaped display unit.
For example, the display unit will alert the driver if the taxi is travelling too close to another vehicle or a pedestrian. It produces a beep sound and shows an icon of a car or a pedestrian, directing the driver's attention to the immediate danger.
The MobilEye, already used by several car manufacturers and logistics companies, will be tested by 30 ComfortDelGro taxis and retail at $2,300 each.
Said the CEO of ComfortDelGro Mr. Yang Ban Seng, "this device acts as another 'eye' for our cabbies, who spend a large part of their days and nights on the roads." He also singled it out as one of the company's efforts to prevent accidents.
Veteran ComfortDelGro taxi driver Pek Ban Choon agreed: "I believe this device will help me look out for dangers on the road. I will still need to be 100% aware of my surroundings but it's always good to have added help."
