E-commerce scams most serious crime in first half of 2014In a release by Singapore Police Force (SPF), the mid year crime brief for January to June 2014 shows a “distinct shift to crimes being perpetrated online,” quoting Director of Commercial Affairs Department, Mr. Tan Boon Gin.   E-commerce crimes involved multiple payment online purchase scams, Paypal email scams and Internet love scams. This has resulted in an increase of 1.4 percent, from 15,006 cases to 15,219 cases in the overall crime as compared to the same period last year. To counter the growing trend of online crimes, much effort has been put in to educate the public on various types of online scams via digital advertorials, articles and videos. As the source of most Internet frauds tracks down to foreign sites, the police will continue working with our foreign counterparts to prevent and stop such activities. The other three major crime concerns of this year are – cyber extortion, serious hurt, and rape. Photo: Josh Pesavento via Wylio
