Many of us have lived in Singapore for years — some all our lives — but if there's one thing that never fails to intrigue us about this island-state, it's the myriad cultures, and the food options that come with it.
Happening again this year is the Singapore Food Festival, something of a crasher in local delicacies, made up of events that promote education and interaction:
BBQ by the Beach
The four-hour seafood barbecue occurring July 11-12 and July 18-19, 6:30pm will feature satay and otah of assorted meats, spit-roasted Australian lamb, as well as hot favourite feature, the Hawaiian-style underground oven imu preparing sambal stingray and king prawns. Tickets are $39 — 534 (group) on the Sentosa website.
Singapore Chinese Dialect Heritage Feast
From July 11-20, 11am-11pm, walk down the newly-revamped Chinatown Food Street and sample up to 20 dishes like Hokkien rickshaw noodles, Hakka abacus seeds and Hainanese chicken rice balls.
Suvai
Little India never fails to offer a smorgasbord of tastes each year and this time, it's no different. Suvai (Jul 17-20, opposite Serangoon Plaza), which stands for flavour, will feature foods prepared by eight culinary heavyweights from Singapore and around the region, including prolific cook and author Devagi Sanmugam and the award-winning Sheetharam Prasad. On the menu is Indian cuisine in both traditional and contemporary forms, with dishes like idyappam yera biryani, grilled roulade prata and lamb coated quail egg. Some fusion items like channa pie tee and Indian panna cota. Tickets are $16 on the event website, inclusive of $10 spending credit. $1 from every ticket will go to charity. First 50 customers who spend a minimum of $100 will enjoy a free fish head curry dish at nearby restaurants like Anjappar, Apolo Banana Leaf and Karu's Indian Banana Leaf.
Traditional and modern at ION Orchard
During the festival period (Mon-Fri, 11am-11:45pm), Basement 4 of Orchard Road's top shopping destination will showcase local delicacies that have withstood the test of time. Want to find out what these are and how far back they date? Register by calling 6238-8288 as spots are limited. If you're too used to enjoying local food in its traditional form, Immigrants Gastrobar's Chef Damian D'Silva will set up shop just upstairs on Basement 3 (July 11-20, 10am-10pm), offering his radical take on old favourites.
Nyonya Mobile
And what's a Singapore festival nowadays without some kind of food truck action, amirite? The Nyonya Mobile (July 12-17) will serve up food from the Big Nyonya Restaurant, Candlenut Kitchen and The Nyonya Kitchen, plus interactive exhibits and cooking demos, in five areas: Ang Mo Kio Hub, Century Square Shopping Centre, Orchard Road, Read Bridge and VivoCity.
