Researchers at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) have invented a way to pack an entire DNA laboratory into a mobile phone. Simply called DNAApp, this application enables professionals or hardcore science nerds to sequence DNA from wherever they are.
Created for both Android and iOS mobile phones, the app was developed by molecular cell biologist and team leader of Antibody and Product Development (APD) Laboratory, Dr Samuel K.E. Gan and fellow A*STAR computer science research officer Mr Nguyen Phi Vu.
The application lets its users carry out commonly used functions of DNA sequencing analysis that include reverse complementation, translation, and specific sequence searches.
DNA sequencing is a commonly used technique, which has advanced many areas of biological research, from the understanding of genetic information to the causes and treatment of human diseases.
“We are excited to see that ‘DNAApp’ has proven to be a useful tool for the busy scientist. As the use of mobile devices and their applications become increasingly widespread, we hope to continue to be at the forefront of technology — creating new bioinformatics tools for the advancement of scientific knowledge and making science accessible”, said Gan.
The app is free and available for download from the iTunes app store and Googe Play, and can run with or without Internet connection.
