Bringing together multiple cuisines under one roof isn’t difficult – just ask anyone who grew up in small town America about their local “Asian restaurant”, which served some vague mishmash of Chinese, Japanese and Korean food. Bringing together multiple cuisines under one roof successfully? Now that’s a challenge.
For three years The Fat Cat managed to do that admirably along Jalan Riang and in late 2013 their success led them to move to Holland Village. With the settling in process out of the way, they celebrated their official launch on June 3.
The key to their success is splitting up their operation into essentially three separate restaurants run by three chefs, who specialise in each respective cuisine (although they work in a centralised kitchen). Masala Mantra is their North Indian section, serving up favourites like tandoori chicken (from $10), mutton vindaloo ($14) and a variety of briyanis (from $5) along with freshly-baked Indian breads (from $2.50). The French Onion is their western offering with French standards such as escargot ($12) and duck confit ($24) together with Italian pastas and pizzas (from $15), and steaks (from $18). For Asian flavours, there’s Thai Yai, which will satisfy all your mango salad ($12), tom yum ($14) and green curry ($13) cravings.
We got to sip on a couple of Fat Cat’s mojitos ($12) during our visit and were impressed. The best part? They’re available one-for-one from Tuesdays to Thursdays as part of an introductory offer. If that doesn’t give you some idea of how generous the bar here is, they also host a weekly beer buffet on Thursdays from 5:30 — 7:30pm for just $38. Your Thursday evening productivity might never be the same.
The Fat Cat is at 17D Lorong Liput, 6465-1107. Open Tue - Thu, Sun noon - 2:30pm, 5:30 - 11:30pm, Fri - Sat noon - 2:30pm, 5:30 - 12:30am.
