The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Singapore has voiced its concerns over the burning of a Singapore flag during an anti-China protest in the Binh Duong province of Vietnam.
According to a statement issued yesterday, MFA confirms that the flag was burnt by demonstrators in the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) on May 13.
"This is a serious incident. The flag is a sacred national symbol and should be treated with respect," said an MFA spokesperson.
Singapore's strong views have been conveyed to the Vietnamese government via a diplomatic note from its embassy in Hanoi. The statement reveals that representations to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Public Security have also been made to ensure the incident doesn't happen again, and that the government is monitoring the situation closely.
There have been no reports so far of Singaporeans being affected by the demonstrations.
