The comedy community in Singapore is in mourning following the sudden passing of Vernon Lewis. The stand-up comedian, stuntman and musician died on Sunday May 11, at the age of 36 after suffering a heart attack.
Born in Maryland in the United States, Lewis made a name for himself as a stuntman, taking on stunt double and stunt performer roles in films like Thor, The Green Hornet and The A-Team, and in TV shows like CSI: NY and Castle.
Lewis arrived in Singapore in 2011 to continue his career at Universal Studios Singapore, but he soon became known for his ability with the microphone. One of his first appearances in the limelight came during the 20th World Orchid Conference in 2011 where he went around town dressed as an orchid.
He was a regular fixture at Home Club's Comedy Masala and had been scheduled to perform at its last show earlier this week.
He also hosted the launch of the Magners Singapore International Comedy Festival last month.
Tributes were paid by friends and fellow comedians from around the world who remembered his energy, his encouraging words, his unique talents and, of course, his humour.
Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD), a non-profit organisation which helps abandoned and stray dogs, posted a memorial which spoke volumes; Lewis and his wife Kristiina had recently adopted two dogs through them. In lieu of gifts and flowers, a campaign has been launched in his memory to raise funds for ASD.
Lewis was farewelled in Singapore on Monday, and his body has been flown home to Washington D.C. for funeral arrangements. Another remembrance service will be held in Singapore in a few weeks time.
Lewis leaves behind a comedy scene that is finally taking flight, thanks in no small part to him.
