There's just something about the late Malaysian director Yasmin Ahmad.
Sure, many of her films, which touch on typically taboo topics such as cross-cultural relationships, religion and sex, ended up blockbusters, but unlike others that have been given similar accolades, they weren't flashy.
As did her renowned TV commercials for Petronas and Singapore's Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Yasmin's films are known to touch the heart of the viewer in ways previously unawakened.
With her last known film Chocolate, it's the same. In less than four minutes, the award-winning director shows how, despite Malaysia's multi-faceted contradiction, life goes on, even if not all of it is sweet.
