Singapore has offered its Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) neighbours the use of its Changi Command and Control (C2) Centre as a regional Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) coordination centre.
In light of recent natural disasters like Typhoon Haiyan that have hit the region, the offer, made by Defence Minister Dr. Ng Eng Hen at the ASEAN-US defence ministers' informal meeting in Hawaii, was welcomed by the other ministers.
ASEAN ministers noted that a regional HADR coordination centre, modelled after the Information Fusion Centre (IFC) in the Changi C2 Centre, would allow the militaries to respond speedily and effectively to a disaster situation.
With a network of 13 military navies and 51 civilian shipping companies globally, the IFC was deployed to help in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 last month.
