Decided by over 14,000 public votes, the World Gourmet Series Awards of Excellence was held on the morning of April 5 at the Ritz-Carlton Millennia.
The prestigious awards ceremony was graced by specially flown-in guest master chefs along with 700 attendees, and brought a close to the extravagant 11-day celebration of food and culinary prowess, held in Singapore.
Amongst 700 entries, Bacchanalia was hailed New Restaurant of the Year, while the already renowned Jaan picked up the Restaurant of the Year and — thanks to Chef Julien Royer — Chef of awards. Speakeasy setup 28 Hong Kong Street walked away with Bar of the Year, Will Simmons of Osteria Mozza was named Restaurant Manager of the Year, Andres Lara of Pollen was voted Pastry Chef of the Year and Executive Chef of the Year went to Christopher Christie of Marina Bay Sands.
Trendy watering hole Le Bistrot Du Sommelier too received a twin tip of the hat, seeing its sommelier Max Fedkiw named Sommelier of the Year, as well as its protégé Brandon Foo crowned Rising Chef of the Year.
Other award recipients include Chung Lap Fai of Hua Ting Restaurant, who was recognised as Asian Cuisine Chef of the Year and his restaurant Hua Ting voted Asian Restaurant of the Year, while lifetime achievement awards went to chef Alan Palmer of the Singapore Chefs Association and the World Association of Chefs Societies, and chef Kenny Kong of Resorts World Sentosa.
Regional award recipients included: Gunther Wolfsbruber of the MGM Macau clinching Pastry Chef of the Year, Tan Kim Weng of Shang Palace, Kuala Lumpur voted Asian Cuisine Chef of the Year, Baan Khanitha Thai Cuisine of Bangkok winning Asian Restaurant of the Year, Antonio Escalante of Antonio’s, Manila taking home the title of Restaurateur of the Year and Le Cordon Bleu, Dusit Culinary School of Bangkok bagging the Institution of the Year award.
The World Gourmet Summit Charity Dinner held at W Singapore Sentosa Cove on Friday evening raised $750, 288 for the Community Chest and its 80 plus charities. A glamorous soiree with a sumptuous meal prepared by two-star Michelin chef Sergi Arola, alongside chefs Matthew Woolford, Andrew Nocente, Eric Goh, Larry Li and Suparat Somkoon, this 14th installment of the charity affair increased the total funds raises by all 14 dinners to a grand $5.5 million in total. Guests’ hearts were warmed by beneficiaries who displayed their talents despite their disabilities.
