The beloved musical The Sound of Music comes to Singapore this July, and 18 young talents from across the island will be taking their first shot at stardom.
Part of Rodgers and Hammerstein's legendary canon, The Sound of Music is the story of the Von Trapp family and their escape from Nazi-occupied Europe. The musical won six Tony Awards during its original run on Broadway in 1959, and the film version picked up five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, in 1965. Many of its musical numbers have become popular standards including “Edelweiss”, “My Favourite Things” and the titular “The Sound of Music”.
The 18 performers will play six of the seven Von Trapp children on a rotational basis – the girls, Gretl, Marta, Brigitta and Louisa, and the boys, Frederich and Kurt. They were picked from a pool of over 400 applicants who represented 50 schools and resident director Anton Luitingh was flown in to observe the auditions. Rehearsals will begin in June.
The Sound of Music opens at the MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands on July 11. Tickets are on sale now from SISTIC.
