![Anti-Crime Watch: You can now only buy three prepaid SIM cards max]()
The maximum the number of prepaid SIM cards one can register has been reduced from 10 to three to curb criminal exploitation.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the revised limit, which took effect on April 1, to reduce the use of fraudulent prepaid SIM cards in criminal activities such as cheating scams, unlicensed moneylending, gambling-related and vice-related activities.
Unlicensed moneylending syndicates, for instance, are known to use prepaid SIM cards to communicate with debtors and syndicate members.
While the new cap is only applicable to new prepaid SIM card registrations, existing subscribers are allowed to continue using their prepaid SIM cards without the option of registering additional ones if they've maxed out the limit.
Singaporeans can now also purchase prepaid SIM cards using their passports, instead of just their NRICs previously.
Prepaid SIM card regulations were first introduced in 2005 in which children under the age of 15 weren't allowed to purchase them.
