FAST: 'We are not suggesting that foreign domestic workers alienate from locals'Foreign Domestic Worker Asscociation for Social Support and Training (FAST) says that the intention of its special foreign worker clubhouse is not to alienate them from locals and create a foreign domestic enclave. In a letter sent to TODAY, William Y. M. Chew, executive director of FAST, explained that the decision behind the clubhouse project was made after both observing popular hot spots like City Plaza, Lucky Plaza and Peninsula Plaza where foreign domestic wokers (FDW) congregate and getting feedback from the FDWs themselves, many of whom requested for an alternative place to meet and socialise. From their visits to the FDW hot spots, FAST noticed that business owners there weren't all too pleased with the FDWs crowding around their shop frontages and discouraging other patrons from entering their shops. By expediting the clubhouse project, there will be a place "for FDWs, managed by FDWs in the long run" wich they can "truly call their own". While it is important to integrate and assimilate FDWs in a multi-cultural society like ours, Mr. Chew said "it takes time and conscious effort on the part of organisations such as FAST...and, ultimately, the general public to be more accepting and embracing."
