[field_image]The National University of Singapore (NUS) will convert Ridge View Residences at Kent Ridge campus into its fourth residential college and the first one outside University Town (UTown) which opened three years ago, according to media reports.
Currently, Ridge View Residences comprises six blocks of dormitories. The refurbished residential college (RC) will open at the start of the new academic year in August.
The Ridge View RC will take in 200 freshmen and offer three modules with a greater focus on industry engagement, said Vice Provost (Student Life) Professor Tan Tai Yong.
He hopes that it will produce graduates with strong communication skills and who are passionate about their chosen industries.
The reason for the move is so that students who live in RCs will be able to learn more from their teachers as they live under one roof. A master and about five faculty members stay at each residential college.
Unlike the university’s six halls of residence, RCs also have mandatory out-of-classroom activities and multi-disciplinary courses on topics such as the pursuit of happiness.
Based on a 2013 survey of 3,000 NUS students, those who lived in RCs were able to enjoy more interaction with faculty members compared to students who stayed in residential halls. They also felt that they became smarter and more sociable.
