In the wake of his death last night, dozens of tributes have been pouring out for the late ex-president S R Nathan. The lives of those he touched during his years in civil service as well as his 12-year term (the longest on record) as the nation's head are countless — it would be an impossible task to give him an appropriate gesture of gratitude that matches his famed magnanimity.
Well, this one comes close. Back in May this year, the 92-year-old was treated to a heartwarming surprise when he turned up as a guest of honour to his own award ceremony.
