Maids in SingaporeA male employer who tried to cover up his physical abuse of a maid by buying her a ticket to Indonesia was sentenced to eight months in jail yesterday. According to one of the deputy public prosecutors in charge of the case, his action "shows a general lack of remorse." It seems like it.  The employer, Malaysian permanent resident Lin Sin Jye, 40, reportedly came home one night in Aug 2012 "in a rage" and started hitting Siti Nurbayah with a plastic shower head. She broke her right index finger while trying to protect herself. Siti managed to escape two months later, and by that time she had already lost a considerable amount of weight because her employers were not giving her enough food. "She was distressed and had numerous injuries all over her body when she was found crying by a maid agent in the same building," said the report. It's wasn't just Lin who maltreated the maid. His wife, Ngoa Choi Yin, who had been sent to jail more than a year ago for separate charges of maid abuse, would also assault Siti on numerous occasions. According to the report, Ngoa has now "disappeared".  In his defence, Lin claimed that he was seldom home in Aug 2012 and therefore could not have been caused the injuries himself.  Photo (for illustration purposes only): Transient Workers Count Too via Travelfish.org
