These drivers may be asking themselves now: Was last night's drink worth it?
Traffic police caught 16 drink-driving motorists in the early hours of Thursday. According to Channel NewsAsia, there were 15 men and one woman, aged between 22 and 47, who failed the Breath Evidential Analyster test. Some 80 motorists were stopped and checked.
Upon conviction, those caught driving under the influence of alcohol will be disqualified from driving from 12 to 48 months, depending on their BEA test results. Their driving licences will be revoked and they'll need to retake the theory and practical driving tests.
First-time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000. Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years, as well as up to six strokes of the cane.
The operation comes ahead of the holiday season.
