Renn AiraIt's one step forward and two leaps back for Singapore's art scene. A miscommunication between the National Gallery Singapore (NGS) and the museum's retail wing Gallery & Co has forced a family-initiated art exhibition to be unceremoniously pulled down from the walls. Troubles were afoot for the 'When Renndom Met Airany' exhibition since the museum's opening. Some 19 artworks done up by siblings Renn and Aira Lim were up as part of a showcase at Gallery & Co, but was soon disallowed due to NGS having a strict policy that "no art exhibitions can be launched in its premises which are not curated or approved by them".  Naturally, their parents Claire and Pann Lim were heartbroken after they broke the news to the duo. Their family art collective, Holycrap, put out an impassioned depiction of events that has since gone viral on Facebook.    (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); To our dearest family, friends & wonderful supporters of Holycrap. Do bear with this long post as it is with incredulous... Posted by holycrap.sg on Saturday, 28 November 2015 Gallery & Co admitted their error in a regretful announcement of the exhibition's closure.    (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); It is with much regret and sadness that we have to announce the closing of “When Renndom Met Airany” as of yesterday.... Posted by Gallery & Co on Saturday, 28 November 2015 With so much hate from the local creative community, NGS had no choice but to respond to all the angry queries to defend their newly established reputation.    (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Some of you may have queries about the exhibition When Renndom Met Airany. We would like to share with you that the... Posted by National Gallery Singapore on Sunday, 29 November 2015 Gallery & Co also leapt to the defence of NGS:   (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Further to our earlier posting, we wish to also clarify that we are aware that our retail and food space at the National... Posted by Gallery & Co on Sunday, 29 November 2015 Ah well. All the more reasons why artists (aspiring and current) have such a hard time in Singapore — such rigid edicts always stub out the flow of creative output. Hopefully both Renn and Aira won't be too discouraged over such realities and continue to pursue their interest in the arts.  Photo: Holycrap.sg Facebook page
