Despite having performed here several times, Adam Lambert shouldn't expect another warm welcome here, ahead of his headlining performance in MediaCorp's Countdown 2016 show.
Right now, there are over 14,320 signatures (and counting) in a petition against the American Idol sensation performing in the annual televised show. Apparently, because he's uh... flamboyant.
Feast your eyes upon this jaundiced basis on why he shouldn't be performing here: "Adam Lambert is hardly the kind of performer to send off our historic Jubilee Year or to usher in the New Year. His track record displays a flagrant disregard for the sensitivities of his audience – including whether or not children are watching. Singaporeans can enjoy a good show without their consciences being affronted by lewd acts in the name of entertainment. In addition, a simple online search would reveal that he is well-known for his active promotion of a highly sexualized lifestyle and LGBT rights, both of which are contrary to mainstream Singaporean values."
There's more of the same bigoted rationale behind the petition (linked here if you need a laugh), including:
- Showing disregard for the 'family-centric values' of Singaporeans
- He's fraught with controversy even in his home country
- He is unpredictable, and is prone to offensive acts on stage
- His most recent music video features female showgirls and male strippers
- We need to preserve our nation's moral fibre
Good grief.
Luckily, there are some decent, rational people in Singapore. A counter-petition has been set up with over 12,000 signatures (and counting too). "We the moral majority of Singapore utterly denounce and condemn the obvious sexual orientation discrimination demonstrated by the other petition on this site that is against Adam Lambert performing in Countdown 2016." "Please allow Adam Lambert to perform in Countdown 2016 to demonstrate to the whole world that Singapore is a country that shuns discrimination and promotes diverse inclusive points of view."
Whose force will triumph? The dark side or the light? Stay tuned for more of ludicrous Singaporean close-mindedness.
To be honest, who the hell watches the Countdown shows anyway? The fact that Adam Lambert is headlining makes us steer further away from the television. But not because he's gay; he just makes shitty pop music.
