An elderly lady unfortunately met her end in a most hapless manner — getting knocked down by an inattentive deliveryman.
77-year-old Ang Char Boh had been using a walking stick to cross the two-lane Upper Boon Keng Road in April, but got hit by a van driven by 41-year-old Wu Chung Liang, who failed to see her, The Straits Times reports. The septuagenarian was flung forward for a distance of 15m. She was conveyed to the hospital unconscious, and died an hour after the accident.
The whole thing was captured on video through a dashboard camera of a car parked on the opposite side of the road, which showed that Ang had paused to give way to vehicles before crossing. Though the prosecution accepted there was slight negligence in Ang's side, they argued that Wu should have noticed her approaching.
The deliveryman has since been banned from driving for five years and sentenced to a week in jail after pleading guilty to causing the elderly lady's death through negligence.
