Oh, sweet irony.
A man who conned three pawnshops into taking fake Audemars Piguet watches for a total of $98,000 has been sentenced to spend time in jail for 18 months.
Too bad he can't wear a watch — fake or not — while inside.
Fong Kheng Yue, 44, pleaded guilty yesterday to three counts of scheming to cheat three pawnshops. His alleged accomplices, both in their early 30s, are still awaiting trial.
"The court heard that some time early this year, [one of the accomplices] allegedly told Fong that he had several counterfeit Audemars Piguet watches. They decided to pass them off as the real thing and cheat pawnshops," reports The Straits Times.
The pawnshops they conned were Heng Seng in Toa Payoh, Money Max in Tampines and Soon Yi in Woodlands.
"As part of the deal, Fong would keep 10 per cent of the proceeds on the pledge, and hand over the rest to Lam," it adds.
The scheme reportedly earned Fong $10,000 in "commission".
Repeat after us: What's the time? It's karma time.
